We are all Armenians!
La settima edizione del Levante International Film Festival ospiterà al suo interno l’iniziativa Questione armena e cultura europea, che si pone come obiettivi sia l’indagine sul legame tra la cultura armena e la terra pugliese sia sul rapporto particolare tra la letteratura tedesca e la questione armena. Nella cultura e nella letteratura tedesca la questione armena occupa un posto di straordinario rilievo.
Il rapporto tra la Puglia e il popolo armeno è soprattutto legato proprio agli eventi storici del secondo decennio del ‘900 che tanto hanno scosso, come si è visto, scrittori e intellettuali tedeschi: Bari, a causa della sua posizione geografica diventa uno dei più rilevanti centri di accoglienza in Italia della diaspora armena. Il mare Mediterraneo è infatti per gli Armeni via di fuga dalla Turchia e le coste adriatiche dell’Italia saranno tra i primi luoghi di approdo dei superstiti. Ma il fatto che a Bari sia stato fondato negli anni che seguirono l’immigrazione armena un vero e proprio quartiere armeno, il cosiddetto “villaggio armeno” di Nor Arax, fu dovuto anche alla presenza nella città pugliese di Hrand Nazariantz, considerato uno dei massimi poeti della letteratura armena del ‘900.
Il progetto Questione armena e cultura europea si articola in tre parti: una mostra, una rassegna cinematografica e un convegno. La rassegna cinematografica, in collaborazione con il Levante International Film Festival, si svolgerà nelle sedi di Bari e Foggia. Le proiezioni dei film, Ararat, Dust, La masseria delle allodole ,Mars, dove nascono i sogni e Vodka Lemon,importanti pellicole che trattano della situazione politico-sociale successiva alla caduta del regime sovietico, ed in particolare della questione armena, avverranno, per Foggia, al Cinema Falso Movimento, per Bari, al Cinema Armenise. Di grande interesse è, inoltre, la prima assoluta del film Asche und Phönix (Cenere e fenice) di Merlyn Solakhan e Manfred Blank, in proiezione al Salone degli Affreschi del Palazzo Ateneo di Bari.
The 7th edition of Levante Film Festival will host the initiative Armenian Issue and European Culture which has its goal in the survey on both the connection between the Armenian culture and the Apulian land and on the peculiar link between German literature and the Armenian issue. The relation between Apulia and Armenian people is strictly linked to that historical event in the second decade of the 20th century that really moved, as shown, German writers and intellectuals: Bari, due to its geographic position, becomes one of greatest emergency centres of the Armenian diaspora in Italy. As a matter of fact, the Mediterranean sea looks like an easy way out from Turkey and the Italian Adriatic coasts will be among the first shores for the survivors. But the fact that in Bari, in the years after the Armenian immigration, was founded a real Armenian quarter, the so-called “Armenian Village” of Nor Arax, was due also to the presence in the Apulian city of Hrand Nazariantz, who was considered one of the greatest poets of Armenian literature of 20th century.
The project We are all Armenians and European Culture is structured in three parts: an exhibition, a cinematographic review and a meeting. The cinematographic review will take place in the dedicated locations of Bari and Foggia, with the collaboration of Levante International Film Festival. The screenings Ararat, Dust, La Masseria delle Allodole, Mars, Dove nascono i Sogni e Vodka Lemon, all interesting films treating the socio-political situatiuon set up in the period of post-sovietic regime and focusing particularly the issue of Armenians, will take place at Falso Movimento Cinema in Foggia and Armenise Cinema in Bari. Furthermore, the world premiere of the film Asche and Phönix , will be screened at Salone degli Affreschi of the Ateneo (university) in Bari.

SINOSSI\SYNOPSIS
E' la saga dei due fratelli Avakian, che facendo scelte di vita diverse, preparano due destini tragicamente opposti di vita e di morte, per i loro figli. Il fratello maggiore, Assadour, lascia l'Armenia da ragazzo per andare a studiare medicina a Venezia. Diventa un medico di successo a Padova, si sposa con una nobildonna e ha due figli. Il fratello più tranquillo, Aram, legato alle tradizioni familiari, nella sua farmacia nel villaggio natale in Anatolia, fa conoscere le novità occidentali, ma la sua numerosa famiglia incarna i valori e la cultura del popolo armeno. Dopo molti anni di lontananza, nel 1915 i due fratelli combinano una rimpatriata: Assadour con la famiglia si prepara a tornare in Anatolia con due automobili, carico di doni e di nostalgia. Aram arreda con eleganza la "masseria delle allodole", la villa in campagna, preparando per tutti loro un'accoglienza memorabile. Ma l'incontro con questi familiari italiani non avverrà mai. Si scoprirà più tardi, infatti, che sono stati coinvolti nell'orrendo genocidio perpetrato sugli armeni dai turchi, alleati dei tedeschi, nel corso della prima guerra mondiale.
It is the saga of the two brothers Avakian who, by making different life choices, prepare two tragically opposite destinies of life and death for their children. The elder brother, Assadour, leaves Armenia when he is a boy to study medicine in Venice. He becomes a successful physician in Padua, marries a noble woman and has two children. The quieter brother, Aram, tied to family traditions, conveys the news from the Western world in his pharmacy located in the native village in Anatolia, although his family embodies the values and culture of the Armenian people. After many years away, in 1915 the two brothers organize a reunion: Assadour with the family prepares to return to Anatolia with two cars full of gifts and nostalgia. Aram elegantly decorates the "Lark Farm", the villa in the countryside, preparing a memorable welcome for all. But the meeting with this Italian family will never take place. It will be unveiled, in fact, that they were involved in the horrid genocide on the Armenians by the Turks, allied to the Germans during the First World War.

SINOSSI\SYNOPSIS
Mars è il nome che si legge sul cartello della stazione ferroviaria di un piccolo paese in Crimea, ma è anche il nome della vicina industria di giocattoli che un tempo produceva per l'intera Unione Sovietica dando lavoro all'intera popolazione della regione. Lì, un giorno arriva il famoso pugile Boris l'invincibile. In fuga da se stesso e dalla sua vita, il campione era salito su un treno senza curarsi della destinazione e si era subito addormentato. Al suo risveglio, vedendo come prima cosa la scritta al neon MARS, scende dal treno. Boris trascorre solo ventiquattro ore nella piccola cittadina, ma riesce a sconvolgere la vita di due degli abitanti, Greta, una libraia e Grigorij, il suo fidanzato. La presenza di quest'uomo che viene da lontano e non sa dove sta andando, li pone infatti dinanzi a una svolta...

Il film documentario di Merlyn Solakhan e Manfred Blank racconta la battaglia del teologo tedesco Johannes Lepsius (1858-1926) per la sopravivenza del popolo armeno in Anatolia. Insieme al massimo conoscitore di Lepsius, Hermann Goltz, nella Turchia di oggi, i registi si sono messi sulle tracce delle opere pie distrutte dalla politica genocida dell'impero ottomano, proponendo in tal modo immagini struggenti di un mondo del passato-presente che si voleva cancellare per sempre.
The documentary film of Merlyn Solakhan and Manfred Blank describes the fight of the german theologian Lohannes Lepsius (1858-1926) for the saving of the Armenian population in Anatolia. Thanks to the collaboration of Hermann Gorltz, aquaintance of Lepsius, the directors try to put on benevolent works destroyed by the turkish politcs of genocide representing moving images of a world the Turkish Empire wanted to cancel for ever.

My brother gorilla
Il 2009 per decisione dell’ UNEP - programma dell’ Onu rivolto all’ ambiente - è l’ “anno del Gorilla”. Questo magnifico primate, più vicino all’uomo di quanto si tenda a credere, una sorta di fratello nella catena evolutiva, è purtroppo a grave rischio estinzione. Il LIFF, che quest’ anno giunge alla sua settima edizione, non può non abbracciare la campagna voluta dall’ Onu in difesa di colui che per il Film Festival è da sempre l’animale simbolo. Non a caso, proprio come il Gorilla, il Cinema Indipendente è una specie a rischio di estinzione e destinata a lottare per la propria la sopravvivenza!
La rassegna che si terrà sul Gorilla avrà pertanto l’onore di ospitare due biologhe di fama internazionale: l’evoluzionista Shelly Masi, che ci sorprenderà con inedite notizie sull’apprendimento sociale dei gorilla, e, Chloe Cipolletta, scienziata da tempo impegnata in Camerun col programma del WWF “AFGAP” per la salvaguardia delle grandi scimmie africane. Durante l’intervento della Cipolletta verranno inoltre proiettati brani tratti dal documentario “ Wild Gorilla”, realizzato grazie alla sua collaborazione.
La rassegna sarà caratterizzata dalla proiezione di diversi film a dimostrazione di quanto anche il Cinema sia debitore nei confronti di questo straordinario animale.
The UNEP ( United Nation Environment Programme) decides that the 2009 is “The year of Gorilla”. This magnificent primate, closer to the human being more than what it is believed a kind of brother in the evolutionary chain,and it is unfortunately dying out. The LIFF, which this year is at its seventh edition, can obviously support this campaign wanted by ONU because the gorilla is always been the symbol of the Film Festival. Not by accident the Indipendent Cinema, like the gorilla, is an endangered species and it is doomed to struggle for its own survival!
The review about Gorilla will have the honour to give the hospitality to two worldwide famous biologists: the evolutionist Shelly Masi who will astonish us with untold news about the social learning of gorillas and Chloe Cipolletta who is a scientist working in Camerun with the WWF Programme called “AFGAP” for the safeguard of the big African apes. During the Cipolletta’s speech it will also projected some tracks drawn from the documentary “Wilde Gorilla”, realized thanks to her collaboration.
The Review will be characterized by the screening of different films to demonstrate how much the Cinema owes to this extraordinary animal.

Shelly Masi
Ha terminato la stesura della tesi in Ecologia presso l'Istituto di Antropologia Evoluzionistica Max Planck a Lipzia (Germania), discussa poi all’Università “La Sapienza” di Roma (2007). La sua ricerca mira ad indagare l’ecologia del nutrimento dei gorilla occidentali della Repubblica Centrafricana (Bai-Hokou) in cui ha trascorso complessivamente due anni e mezzo raccogliendo dati per la sua tesi di laurea. Dal gennaio 2008 è impegnata in studi post dottorato di ricerca sull'ontogenesi delle abitudini alimentari dei gorilla nel bassopiano della Repubblica Centroafricana presso il Museo Naturale di Storia Natura ed il Centro Nazionale di Ricerca Scientifica a Parigi.
She completed the writing of her Ph.D thesis in Ecology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig (Germany), which she later defended at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. Her research aims to investigate the feeding ecology of wild western gorillas of Central African Republic (Bai-Hokou) where she spent overall two years and a half collecting data for her Ph.D. and diploma thesis. Currently, she is continuing her post-doc studies on the 'Onthogeny of food choice in wild western lowland gorillas of Central African Repubblic' at Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris.
Chloè Cipolletta
Ambientalista 32 enne italiana, è un’eminente esperta sui gorilla che vivono sulle pianure occidentali. Chloe ha vissuto in Dzanga- Sangha per 5 anni, studiando quello di cui si nutrono i gorilla, i loro spostamenti, e i fattori che complessivamente influiscono sulla loro salute. Durante questo processo, Chloe s’è avvicinata molto a questi potenti animali che si sono abituati alla sua presenza. Cipolletta si è occupata delle ricerche per il documentario “Gorilla wild” per il programma televisivo National Geographic Ultimate Explorer.
32- year old Italian environmentalist, she is an eminent expert on gorillas that live on the western plains. Chloe has lived in Dzanga-Sangha for 5 years, studying what gorillas eat, their movements, and the factors that affect their health. During this process, Chloe came close to these very powerful animals who have become accustomed to her presence. Cipolletta was concentrated on research for the documentary "Wild Gorilla" for the National Geographic Ultimate Explorer television program.
Angelo Quaranta
Medico Veterinario, abilitato all’esercizio della professione ed iscritto all’Ordine dei Medici Veterinari della provincia di Bari.Professore di “Fisiologia ed Endocrinologia Veterinaria” presso la Facoltà di Medicina Veterinaria di Bari.Autore di numerose pubblicazioni scientifiche su argomenti di Fisiologia, Endocrinologia ed Etologia degli animali domestici. Relatore nell’ambito del programma nazionale per la formazione continua degli operatori della Sanità (ECM) con argomenti di terapia comportamentale del cane.Vicedirettore del Dipartimento di Produzione Animale dell’Università di Bari (2008-11).
Refererente per diverse riviste scientifiche. Socio della Società Italiana di Fisiologia Veterinaria (SOFIVET) e socio onorario della Associazione di Studi Etologici e Tutela della Relazione con gli Animali (ASETRA).

A gorilla escapes from the zoo and finds shelter at poor Donald Duck house who helped by his three nephews tries to save his butt. This is a funny short directed by King whose worthy co-protagonist is this ferocious but hilarious gorilla. Excellent animation, great sense of rhythm and surprise ending.

Rockwell è uno dei maestri appartenenenti all’altra faccia del Cinema Americano, quello Indipendente. Grazie alla proiezione dei lavori più importanti di A.Rockwell ed alla presenza del critico cinematografico Giona A. Nazzaro, autore di diversi testi e saggi sul cinema, a lungo collaboratore del Torino Film Festival, si cercherà di conoscere meglio i meccanismi creativi e produttivi che regolano il vitale mondo della Cinematografia Indipendente d’oltreoceano. Ospite d’onore lo sceneggiatore, attore, regista e produttore Brandon Cole, protagonista indiscusso della libera creatività statunitense.
The present edition of the Levante International Film Festival hosts and dedicates a whole review to the American director Alexandre Rockwell, well-known to the world audience for playing a role in one of the four episodes of the film Four Rooms, where Quentin Tarantino strongly wanted him. Rockwell is one of the masters of the other side of the American cinema, the Independent one.
Together with Alexandre Rockwell himself and the film critic Giona A. Nazzaro, author of several texts and essays on cinema and for a long time co-worker with the Torino Film Festival, we will try to better know the creative and productive mechanisms which rule the vital world of the oversea Independent Cinema also by watching the most important works of A.Rockwell.

Brandon Cole
Brandon Cole è nato a Chicago nel 1948. Nel 1970, presso il Sarah Lawrence College si iscrive al corso di scrittura creativa e nel 1972 consegue una doppia laurea in letteratura e in filosofia. Nel 1979, scrive la sua prima opera teatrale Jamie’s Gang e incontra John Turturro. Insieme producono e mettono in scena Jamie’s Gang presso i teatri Off-Off di Broadway. Nei sette anni successivi, sempre con John Turturro, mette in scena numerose opere teatrali, tutte presso i teatri Off-Off. Tra le opere rappresentate, anche Steel On Steel dello stesso Brandon Cole basato sulla storia della famiglia di John Turturro e trasposto successivamente nel film MAC. E’ in questo periodo che “Imperfect Love” inizia ad essere scritto. Nel 1986, a Brandon è conferita una borsa di studio per la sceneggiatura teatrale dalla New York State Foundation for the Arts.
Dal 1988 al 1990, Brandon e John Turturro scrivono e riscrivono la sceneggiatura per il film MAC, realizzato nel 1991. Turturro ha curato la regia e Brandon ha sempre lavorato sul set e seguito passo dopo passo il processo di montaggio. Nel 1992 MAC vince il premio Camera D’Or a Cannes. Con il denaro vinto a Cannes, Turturro decide di trasformare il testo teatrale Imperfect Love di Brandon Cole in un film e nei due anni successivi i due scrivono la sceneggiatura che dà vita al film Illuminata.
Brandon Cole was born in Chicago in 1948.In 1970, he enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College to study creative writing, graduating with a B.A. in 1972 with a double major in literature and philosophy. In 1979, he completed his first stage play, Jamie’s Gang and met John Turturro. Together they produced the play and staged it at an Off-Off Broadway Theatre. During the next seven years, he and John Turturro staged plays together, all Off-Off Broadway, including Brandon’s play, “Steel On Steel,” based on Turturro’s family and which later became the film, “MAC.” It was during this period that “Imperfect Love,” began to be written. In 1986, Brandon was awarded a playwriting fellowship by The New York State Foundation for the Arts. From 1988 through 1990, Brandon and John Turturro wrote and rewrote the screenplay for “MAC,” which was filmed in 1991. Turturro directed and Brandon was on set always and through every day of the editing process. “MAC” won the Camera D’Or at Cannes in 1992. With the Cannes prize money, Turturro wanted to turn Brandon’s play, “Imperfect Love,” into a film and for the next two years they wrote the screenplay that became the film, “Illuminata.”

Giona A. Nazzaro (Zurich, 1965) is a freelance journalist. He writes film reviews for Rumore and RockHard and is member of the Filmcritica redaction commitee. He also writes for the weekly magazine Film Tv and for other magazines like Nocturno and Panoramiche. The author of Action! Forme di un transgenere cinematografico(Action! Forms of a cinema transgender), special mention at the Barbaro Award/Filmcritica. He wrote Interview. Conversazioni intorno al cinema (Interview. Conversations about the cinema) and numerous volumes dedicated to the cinema of Hong Kong. He also edited some volumes dedicated to Abel Ferrara’s and Spike Lee’s cinema. He has been member of the Torino Film Festival selection committee under the direction of D'Agnolo Vallan/Turigliatto and is member of the selection committee at the Festival dei Popoli. In few time his first narrative collection will be published by the Perdisa publishing house.

A dieci anni dalla sua scomparsa, il Liff dedica un’ intera giornata al Maestro Stanley Kubrick ed ha l’onore di ospitare in qualità di relatore, il regista, documentarista, nonché suo produttore esecutivo Jan Harlan. Obiettivo della rassegna è quello di tracciare un profilo artistico ed umano, di colui che è considerato uno dei più grandi cineasti del XX secolo. A tal scopo verranno proiettati una serie di documentari sulla sua vita, fra cui “A Life in Pictures” di Jan Harlan e soprattutto i documentari, meno noti rispetto ai film, girati dallo stesso Kubrick.
Ten years after his death, LIFF dedicates an entire day to the Master Stanley Kubrick and is honoured to host as speaker Jan Harlan director and executive producer of Kubrick's movies. Purpose of this event is that of tracing an artistic and human profile of a man considered one of the greatest film-maker of the 20th century.For the occasion, a series of documentaries about his life will be screened among which, " A life in pictures " by Jan Harlan and mostly the least known documentaries by the same Kubrick.

Nel 2005 ha prodotto e diretto Color me Kubrick con John Malkovich, storia vera di un uomo che si intrufolò sul set di Eyes Wide Shut, spacciandosi per il regista Stanley Kubrick, pur sapendo pochissimo del suo lavoro e non assomigliandogli per niente.
Attualmente sta lavorando a Takeover Target, film che presenterà in Australia e Inghilterra.
Bryan W.Cook is world famous American film director, with about 65 films in progress at the moment.He has co-worked with the master Stanley Kubrick in the realization of three films: as assitant director for Barry Lyndon and Shining and as co-producer for Eyes Wide Shut,the last Kubrick's work.
In 2005 he produced and directed Color me Kubrick with John Malkovich, the true story of a man who sneaked in the set of Eyes Wide Shut, pretending to be the director Stanley Kubrick, though he did not know anything about his job and did not even look like him.
At the moment he is working on the film Takeover Target, which he is going to present in Australia and UK.

Il primo documentario che Paul Joyce è riuscito a completare, dopo numerosi ed espliciti episodi di resistenza da parte di Kubrick. Il materiale raccolto da Joyce è davvero interessante grazie alle foto inedite dai set, clip dai capolavori kubrickiani e vere chicche quali gli storyboard de “Il Dottor Stranamore” o ancora le dimostrazioni dell'uso della steadycam ad opera del suo inventore.
La dichiarata malevolenza dei Kubrick verso questo documentario è comprensibile dato il contenuto dei racconti dei testimoni, spesso concentrati sui pettegolezzi. E' il documentario in cui Malcolm McDowell racconta tutto il suo odio verso il regista, poi ritrattato in A Life in Pictures di Jan Harlan.
The first documentary that Paul Joyce was able to finish, after several explicit episodes of resistance by Kubrick . The material gathered is really interesting thanks to unpublished photos of the set, clips from KUBRICK'S masterpieces and true treats such as the storyboard from "Doctor Strangelove" or the demonstration on the use of the steadycam by its inventor.
The declared Kubrick's despite for this documentary, is understandable given the content of some accounts often concentrating on gossip. This is the documentary where Malcolm McDowell tells all his hate toward the director, recanted later on in A Life In Pictures by Jan Harlan.

Questo suo debutto cinematografico fu interamente autofinanziato.
Kubrick's debut as director. A B&W short that takes us in the boxing world with the experience of middleweight Walter Cartier . After a brief introduction on the history of boxing, the director follows Cartier in the preparation and the experience of the match. This debut was entirely self-financed.
